Thanks for visiting me online!
About Bliss: Fighting for My Trans Son's Life, Joy and Fertility is my debut memoir. To be a debut author over fifty is thrilling and I hope we all remember that it's never too late to begin audacious projects that spark our passion and delight.
In addition to writing, I enjoy coaching and teaching. I lead a few different workshops about gender diversity that I've taught in a variety of contexts including at Stanford as part of their work-life program for staff and faculty. I love being with parents who are raising gender diverse kids, and I have a special place in my heart for moms (it's still usually moms) who are advocating for their queer kids. So many of us have become accidental activists because of wanting a better future for our kids, which is why I adore my sisters at freemomhugs.org, a nonprofit that supports the queer community through education, celebration and love. With fifty chapters across the country, there is a mom in every state who can tell you how to keep your kid safe and alive. I have the privilege of being their National Educator. If you need a hug, we're here for you.
Becoming a writer was a secret dream of mine for a long time. It took decades for me to admit it, and another decade to make it happen, maybe that's why I enjoy encouraging writers so much! Sometimes I wish I had figured out how to start sooner, but I learned a lot from my resistance and have an enormous respect for anyone who takes on the tender, ambitious work of writing to be read. I enjoy meeting up with writers to talk about favorite books or essays, and I especially enjoy working as a peer artist leader at bookinc.org where I teach a class about writing personal essays. My writing has appeared in Khôra, Scholastic Parent&Child, Spirituality&Health, and other publications.
I was a Women's Studies major as an undergraduate at Harvard in the 1990s, I earned my MFA at Bennington College in Vermont in 2019, and I live in Northern California. I'm the primary caregiver for my husband, Graham, who has had ALS since 2020. We have three kids and five cats between us.
